The ME Generation!

What is a Millenial? It is me- we have made Google a verb, we're bloggers, facebookers, use Twitter, and know all about the latest technologies. We were the first generation to truly use AIM [wow remember those days!?]. Now that we are all entering the work force, there are multitudes of books and articles written about certain characteristics we exhibit. According to a newarticle "A Millennial's Guide to Millennial Guides" by Dan Macsai he outlines some of the biggest points to categorize a Millennial. As much as some of these points are valid, I believe there are a few additional reasons Macsai does not discuss.

1.
"If you don't tell us you love us, we might break up with you."
Macsai states that since we grew up in a time of Mr. Rogers telling us I love you that we feel like in the work place we must feel love and approval. I do agree with this; however, I don't think this is unique to just Millenials. I don't believe it's going out on a limb by saying that everyone appreciates a few words of encouragement every once in awhile. In addition to encouragement and approval, we also appreciate [at least I do] constructive criticism.

2. "Because, let's be honest, we're pretty fabulous."
The article states that 'Generation Me' is focused on themselves over others and are fully self absorbed. Thus, in the work place when these Millenials get criticized they become 'whiney and uncooperative'. I think about half of this scenario is actually correct. Yes, we are an egotistical generation. We have grown up with AIM profiles about ourselves, Facebook profile all discussing ourselves and to see how many 'friends' we can have, we have Twitter accounts, Myspace, the list goes on and on. I believe the world in general has become more self involved by creating these pages about ourselves for everyone to see. So, of course we are fabulous and if you would like to you can become my friend.

3. "Sorry, can you repeat that? We were updating our Facebook status."
This section is the most right on out of the whole article. Of course we are Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and all the other social networks in between obsessed. We are somewhat self absorbed so when someone writes on our wall we have to know immediately what is going on. Thus the advent of iPhones and Blackberries which simply feeds into our obsession of social networks. Next topic...

4. "Oh, you did NOT just call us 'obnoxious.' MOMMMM!!!"
Recently there was a book that stated that us Millennials are not reasonably mature for the real world. There is a 'story', I use that loosely, about an employee who brought their father in for their performance review. Really? I know I may be a bit naive, but I could not think of one person I know who would do that. So what if we were a little sheltered or coddled in our childhood days, but this does not mean we will bring our parents in to talk to our bosses. Millennials reading this please do not ruin this for the rest of us.

5. "Well, glad that's settled. Wanna grab a drink?"

Companies need to keep Millennials interested by bringing work and play together. My current job has alcohol every Friday- from beer to margaritas, it definitely keeps us youngin's interested. It is an extra perk to have fun coworkers who will go to happy hour or better yet if you bring the alcohol to the office!

Your social reputation

Saying that you can control your reputation is almost like an oxymoron. However, now that social media like Facebook, Twitter and even Blogger are at every one's fingertips people can post whatever they want about companies. What it comes down to is how a company controls their reputation and any criticism online.

Recently, Southwest Airlines had an fiasco with having a foot wide hole in their plane, but it was able to land safely. After the plane landed, passengers began sending in Tweets, Twitpics, and even YouTube. Essentially, starting to ruin their reputation as a reliable airline carrier. However, Christi Day their marketing manager began to twitter about the incident. She linked to the company's official statement, said that everyone on board would be refunded, and essentially defused what could have been feeding frenzy.

Social Media outlets have allowed companies and even celebrities take on the media and other criticizers. These medium can take the guessing came out of who said what and how things work. Southwest shows how intelligent they are as a company for stepping up to the plate and taking on the criticize. I seem them as a much reputable company now for taking a bad situation and turning it to good.

VOLLEYBALL!

It is official! Everything is set for coaching volleyball again this season and I CANNOT WAIT! Last year, was such a great experience. I always said if I had to be a teacher I would teach 8th grade...well why not coach 8th grade?! I am so lucky as well to have my friend Kim help me coach.

Ah, I cannot wait for tryouts, practice [mostly because I love to play too], and the games!!

Here goes nothing...

Perfect summer song

Jack Ingram 'Barefoot and Crazy'

The clouds are partin
The summer suns startin to burn down on that river
My baby's waitin
I got the chevy shaking
IMO blazing a trail to get her
There she is
Shes got her shades on
& man shes lookin strong
Mine all mine for the weekend
The coolers loaded down
We’re headed outta town
Jumpin off the deep end
Goin barefoot and crazy
Me and my baby
Backflip off the flint rock bridge
Double dog dare me and I will
Meet me at the bottom with a cool wet kiss
Shes rockin that bikini top
My hearts skippin like a rock across that water
Don’t ever wanna stop
Goin barefoot and crazy
The sun is droppin
We got the fire poppin &
Its lightin up her blue eyes
With a little bit of luck
It’ll heat things up &
We’ll be lovin in the moonlight
Break out my old guitar
Sing fishin in the dark
Baby get ready
We’ll take a little sip
We’ll take a little dip &
Sleep in the bed of my Chevy
Goin barefoot and crazy
Me and my baby
Just me & her & the man in the moon
Drinkin on a cold bud brew
Mornins gonna come way too soon
We’ll wake up &
Do it all again
Wishin it would never end
Anybody asks where we've been
Tell em
Barefoot and crazy
Barefoot and crazy
Me and my baby
I did a back flip off the flint rock bridge
Double dog dared me and I did
Met me at the bottom with a cool wet kiss
Shes rockin that bikini top
My hearts skippin like a rock
across that water
Don’t ever wanna stop
Goin barefoot and crazy

New Photos!

I finally got a new upload USB port for my camera. I thought I would post some beautiful photos I got. This really doesn't even do the beauty justice [thus why I want a professional camera]. So enjoy! :)

POST ITS!

So I am kind of a Post It nerd so this video is so cool to me. I am honestly in awe of how someone can do this with Post Its! I feel like I need to come up with something cool and creative like this; however, I definitely don't have patience :)

Here is a short video on how the student from SCAD did it...it's pretty amazing. I cannot believe the creativity that people have.

He better get an amazing job from this video- over 2 million views!

Music Today

So... I am going through the Itunes music store like I do periodically. Basically I like to stay abreast on new music coming out. As I look through the list...I am so disgusted and disappointed.
Here is a list of songs I found, feel free to laugh from these ridiculous titles like I did. And don't bother to listen to the song- believe me they're crap.

  • Ice Cream Paint Job by Dorrough [what a ridiculous name for a song]
  • Birthday Sex by Jeremih [worse then the song above]
  • I'm In Miami Bitch by LMFAO [white boys talking about getting crunch, enough said]
  • She Wolf by Shakira [ what happened to her, her Spanish music is good this is techno crap
Overall, these songs make me very upset. How can this crap be in the top 100 downloaded songs when REAL artists like Eric Hutchinson, James Morrison, Katie Herzig, Griffin House, etc are not up there.

Yet one other thing in life that baffles me...alright I am finished

Alzheimer's Association

I remember when I was going through recruitment my freshman year of college. The philanthropies that every house was associated with was very important to me. I remember I really liked Alpha Delta Pi because they were associated with Ronald McDonald house, which I had previously worked with. When I went to Sigma Kappa, I really didn't feel a strong or deep connection with Alzheimer's Association. No one in my family has been struck with the disease nor anyone I know. Over the years and since working for The Alzheimer's Association I have gotten a greater understanding for the awful disease, which I don't think enough people know about. Sad as it is to say, I think people started to understand what the disease was once they saw The Notebook. To me, this award winning video does a perfect job explaining the hardships of dealing with the disease. It's very well done and it is subtle enough so at first you don't understand what is going on, and eventually it just consumes the video- which is exactly how the disease is.

Thanks to organizations like Sigma Kappa all across the country for donating their time, talent, and treasure to all a worthy cause.

Blue, Blue, Blue!

I have never really been into the color Blue. I love yellow and I honestly think because everyone loves blue that is the reason why I didn't like it!

Either way, I love these little collages of pictures. Each of the colors and images are so unique and they all pop in their own individual way

With this images I love all the little wedding details from the hydrangeas to the blueberries each of the little design elements are awesome. I think the coolest job would to be to put each of these pictures together.

Booty Camp

Phew...i have been doing Boot Camp -Josh calls it Booty Camp- and it has been awesome! 2 days a week I work out with Stoney Eskew from Eskew Fitness. I was really scared at first, I thought she was going to be scary tough kind of like Jillian from Biggest Loser. Thankfully she is not this way- she is encouraging yet motivational. She is tough yet understanding. I love it!

I had a metabolic testing first. She tested my calorie burning when I am resting and also when I am working out. This way it I know what target heart rate I should be working out at and I know how many calories I should be eating each day.

I have always been good at cardio, I have always run, played sports etc. However, I haven't ever really lifted weights, done push ups, sit ups, planks, pull ups, you name it. It is good to have someone else push me to do lunges, or shoulder presses. As I sit here my arms feel like Jello- which I am glad because I know I am working hard. :)

hike!

i went on a really great hike at Apex today...it was only sprinkling when i left however halfway up it started to pour! Needless to say Mandy, Griffin and I got soaked! It was fun though, I love getting out and seeing nature. It's rained here so much over the past week that all of the grasses and trees by the trail are so tall- Griffin wanted to run through.

We saw 4 little fawns on the site of the trail- they were so sweet and so trusting. One of them kept getting closer and closer to us....Mandy and I thought about poor Bambi, ha. Griffin was so funny at first he was disinterested in the deer but then after he kept looking up the hill to see if there were more. It was awesome to see them so close.

Now Griffin is passed out on the coach having puppy dog dreams and I am lounging around reading Cosmo! :)

Bumper Stickers

One thing I really don't like- I know I have a lot of things- but something I find incredibly tacky.

BUMPER STICKERS! I am not talking about one or two on a car I am talking about enough that it completely covers up what type of car and what color of car you have. Really people? Why do you need all of those damn stickers?

I think it is a Golden thing- I see the same damn cars on the way to work everyday. 'Save the animals become a vegetarian', 'obama/biden', etc. Gag me....

I really want to just pull off the damn stickers so it leaves that white stickiness after, I would like to see the value of the car with all that sticker residue.

Ok, I am finished with my rant now...time for bed

Bum Leg...

Well it may be over.

Over the past few weeks I have been feeling a bad pain in my lower left leg. I thought it was just strained or whatever, so I kept running on it. I am not sure how good of an idea this was because now I can barely walk. My sister did some tests for me and I can't even balance on my left leg, raise to the ball of my foot or anything. Its excruciating.

I have made it up to 6 miles which is about half way of my half marathon. Honestly, I feel like I am going to have to throw in the towel. I have a month and a half left to complete all of the training and right now I can't even walk.

It's scary...I am only 23 and this is what is happening. Unforunately, my health insurance wont cover anything under 3,000 bucks- so if I had to get an MRI it would be 1,000 bucks, not including the doctor's visits.

I have no idea what I should do.
I am just going to wait it out and hope the pain will magically go away.....

FMYLIFE

I would like to say that by far one of the best websites is fmylife.com
This website makes anyone smile- not matter how much bullshit they have been putting up with in one day. I wonder if somethings are made up, but honestly I don't care. If people can come up with these ridiculous things that happen then more power to them.

Here is a quick listing of my favorites for you newbies:
Today, my daughter asked me when was the first time I had sex. After I told her 22 she quickly shouted, "Beat ya!" She's thirteen. FML

Today, I was at this awesome party and I was dancing with this really attractive girl who started making out with me all of a sudden. Five minutes later, my friend told me that the girl had just given him a blowjob. FML

Today, I was telling my boyfriend I had fake orgasms all the time to piss him off. He replied: "that's okay, I'm f***ing three other girls." FML

Today, to remind myself to write a check for my speech and debate team (Lynbrook Speech and Debate), I wrote "LSD money" on the back of my hand. The Vice Principal saw it, dragged me to the office, and called my parents. FML

True Friendship

I decided to write this blog about what true friendship is to me. As I sit here to write this, I have a hard time. There are some people in my life that are not truly adding value to me as a person. That is the one thing I always strive for when I have people around me. When I say 'add value' this could be as simple as a phone call, a smile, anything that adds to me as a person, if someone rags on me or brings me down- that is not a friend.

With that being said its often hard to let people go who aren't adding value to me. It is hard that no matter how hard you try to keep a friendship going- sometimes things just dissipate and just can't be saved, I supposed. Is this person just too lazy to call? Am I not as 'cool' as their other friends? Have we truly grown apart? Honestly, I have no idea. The thing that makes the most upset is that I have done out of my way to call- and try to see this person and invite them to everything I am doing. Then when it comes down to their turn- I get blown off.

I have always been the type of person to need closure. I can' t just up and not talk to someone ever again- even if I have drifted like most people do. I always try to continue something, try to call, text; do something to show that I am still here. But should I stop doing this? Should I ride this person off as they have clearly done to me?

I suppose it boils down to the fact of when do I stop trying to call. When should I throw in the towel and say "well I tried here and here and I got nothing." It is so hard to just turn my back on someone- after knowing them for such a long time. It's such a bad situation and I just wish people could know the value of effort.

So far what I have done, is slowly shut people out of my life. I confide in other people now, I call other people, and go out with other people. I don't tell them what is doing on my life. Which honestly eats up me. Because all I want is to be able to truly talk to them about EVERYTHING- good and bad in my life. But when I want to tell them something- I am reminded by the facts.

So I suppose the challenge is now, to decide. Where do we-as friends-or I go from here?

Brand New Day

This song never gets old, and on a night like this I just put it on repeat.....

Brand New Day by Forty Foot Echo

Never thought I'd say I'm sorry
Never thought I'd be the one to bring you down
Now when I look out my window
But there doesn't seem to be anyone around

And I think I'll change my ways
So all your words get noticed
Tomorrow's a brand new day
Tomorrow's a new day

We said we'd take little time
For both of us to see
And wonder what it'd be like to carry on
Ya, I know I got crazy
Well I guess that's just me
If I could turn back time before
The wrong

And I, I think I'll change my ways
So all your words get noticed
Tomorrow's a brand new day
Tomorrow's a new day

Ya, And I, I think I'll change my ways
So all your words get noticed
I think I'll change my ways
I think I'll change my ways
Ahhhhh, Ahhhhh
I think I'll change my ways

Never thought I'd say I'm sorry
Never thought I'd be the one
To bring you down

Things that make my day

The following is a short list of things that make my day (aka starts my morning off right):

  • When Griffin sleeps on Josh's side after he gets up and cuddles
  • When I remember my boyfriend kissing me goodbye
  • Hearing a fantastic old song on the way to work (ie this morning it was Poison by Bel biv devoe)
  • Having the sunshine and warmth come through my office windows- it is truly fabulous
  • Not coming into a ton of work related emails
  • Coming into a ton of fun emails/facebook messages from friends
  • When I get the second pot of coffee at work (the first is always too watery)

...more to come later

The New Macbook Wheel

Some of you may know that The Onion is a newspaper commentary that is a spoof. Well this one is great. I recommend watching this video- it's hilarious.

The idea of a wheel to type instead of a keyboard, and having an email take 45 minutes to type...it's fantastic. But it kind of scares me...what if someday it comes to stuff like that...I will just stick to my keyboard for now!

The Internet is Taking Over Our Lives

I found this interesting article about how the internet is taking over our lives. You can read it here.

Essentially, it solidifies my job and shows how important internet marketing is. People are spending 1/3 of their leisure time during any given day on the internet. That is huge-if people are searching, watching videos or just surfing around they are bound to come into contact with multitudes of advertisements and other marketing tools.

So read the article and see for yourself, I think most of us will find that we fall right into the categories about internet usage.
